Allegro Performed by Orquesta Reino de Aragón Conductor: Ricardo Casero Violin: Elli Choi Composed in 1725 as the concluding concerto of Antonio Vivaldi's set The Four Seasons, the Violin Concerto in F minor, RV 297, "Winter," is a vivid Baroque portrait of cold, austerity, and the contrasting comforts of hearth and shelter. Accompanied by a sonnet (likely by Vivaldi) that paints images of biting wind, shivering bodies, slipping ice, and the warmth of fireside respite, the concerto moves through three movements that capture those scenes with stark clarity. The opening Allegro non molto begins with brittle orchestral chords and terse ritornello figures that suggest icy gusts and the abruptness of winter's weather, while the solo violin's clipped, shivering motifs and sudden pauses evoke chattering teeth and tentative steps on frozen ground. The central Largo offers a hushed, intimate contrast: a simple, singing solo line over sustained harmonies that conjures the quiet of a warm room, the glow of the hearth, and reflective calm. The final Allegro returns to nervous energy and frosty motion, alternating brisk, staccato figurations that mimic sliding on ice and hurried footsteps with lively ritornello returns that suggest both peril and exhilarating motion.
