Born in Miami, Florida to Romanian and Peruvian parents, conductor Sebastian Zinca enjoys a flourishing career, recently making his debuts with the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, the Orquestra Sinfónica do Porto Casa da Música, the Orquesta Sinfónica de Navarra, the Polish Baltic Philharmonic and the “Banatul” Philharmonic Orchestra of Timișoara, as well as returning to the Real Filharmonía de Galicia and the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra at the Lucerne Festival.
Previously Assistant Conductor of the the Real Filharmonía de Galicia in 2024 and 2025, Sebastian Zinca has worked extensively with the orchestra, conducting them in thirty-four performances in addition to his responsibilities of assisting chief conductor Baldur Brönnimann.
His work as assistant conductor has also included collaborations with Mark Wigglesworth at Teatro Real Madrid for Shostakovich’s The Nose and with Nicholas Collon and the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde.
Prize winner at the International Antal Doráti Conducting Competition in Budapest and winner the Joan W. Harris Fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival, Sebastian Zinca is a committed advocate for contemporary music, programming works by living composers in nearly every concert over the last seasons. This artistic focus has been recognised by the Lucerne Festival, which - following his 2023 Festival Academy participation - invited him back to lead workshops and to conduct the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra in both 2024 and 2025.
A passionate conductor of opera, Sebastian has led productions at the Sibelius Academy and the Universität der Künste Berlin as well conducting the Orquesta Filarmónica de Gran Canaria for their concert performance of La Bohème. At the European Music Academy Teplice he was awarded the President's Prize for his work on Così fan tutte.
Originally trained as a double bassist at the Juilliard School, Sebastian studied conducting with Sakari Oramo at the Sibelius Academy and completed his advanced studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin as a student of Harry Curtis. At the Sibelius Academy he received additional instruction from Jorma Panula, Johannes Schlaefli, Nicholás Pasquet, Susanna Mälkki, Hannu Lintu and Péter Eötvös. During his years as a student, he gained valuable experience conducting the Orchestra of the Komische Oper, Kammerakademie Potsdam, the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, Tapiola Sinfonietta, Staatstheater Cottbus, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, the Magdeburgische Philharmonie, Oulu Symphony Orchestra, and the Ostrobothnian Chamber Orchestra.
Deeply committed to community engagement, he has used music as a means of outreach and remembrance. Sebastian has given numerous performances in hospitals, nursing homes, and homeless shelters, bringing live music to underserved and vulnerable audiences. In 2017 he presented a program of Holocaust memorial music at Auschwitz.
